Kodungallur is a municipal town in the Thrissur District. It is located about 30 km (19 mi) WestNorth of the city of Kochi, the commercial capital city of Kerala on NH17. It was known in ancient times as Mahodayapuram or Shinkli. Muziris, the world famous and prosperous seaport at the mouth of the Periyar River (also known as Choorni Nadi) was very near to Kodungallur. Kodungallur was also the capital of Kulasekhara dynasty (Second Cheras), who ruled Kerala and some parts of Tamil Nadu from 9th century to 12th century AD. Kodungallur is also the entry point to the Greater Cochin from the North Western parts of Kerala.
